As Alberta’s Republican leader, I believe Truth and Reconciliation Day compels us to reflect on our province’s past and forge a future rooted in fairness.

I strongly advocate repealing the Indian Act, a racist framework that shackles First Nations’ autonomy by restricting their ability to own homes and land on or off reserves. Granting property rights would empower Indigenous communities, fostering economic self-reliance.

I acknowledge the deep pain caused by residential schools. The documented abuses noted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission demand honest dialogue, not oversimplification.

I also believe treaties, which permanently ceded land with binding commitments, must be honoured as both legal and moral obligations.

I’m adamant about transparency in reserve funding. Full annual audits of tax dollars allocated to band councils, as highlighted by the 2023 Auditor General’s report on mismanaged Indigenous funds, are essential for accountability.

Reconciliation, to me, means shifting from handouts to hand ups—through education, opportunity, and equality. I envision a stronger Alberta built on true partnership.

By dismantling outdated systems and embracing equity, we can create a prosperous future where every Albertan thrives.

Cameron Davies is leader of the Republican Party of Alberta.
