A woman remains in critical condition after three intruders allegedly broke into her apartment and set her on fire while she slept, Niagara Regional Police reported.
The horrific incident occurred late Saturday night, August 16, at an apartment building near Vine and Scott streets in St. Catharines. Police were called at 11 p.m. to assist paramedics after the victim suffered severe burns to her upper body and face.
Investigators determined the woman was deliberately targeted by three suspects known to her.
The intruders entered the apartment and used an accelerant to ignite her while she was asleep. On Monday, police arrested Chassidy Archer, 25, and Moises Medeiros, 30, both of St. Catharines, charging them with attempted murder and break and enter to commit an indictable offense.
Medeiros also faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. Both were remanded into custody following a video bail hearing on Tuesday.
Police are actively seeking a third suspect, Rebecca Daigneault, 37, also from St. Catharines, who is wanted for attempted murder and break and enter. Authorities have urged the public not to approach her and to contact 911 if she is sighted.
The investigation is ongoing, with police appealing for information from the public to aid in locating Daigneault and clarifying the motive behind the targeted attack. The incident has shocked the community, raising concerns about safety and prompting calls for increased vigilance.
