The Trump administration is reportedly considering a significant overhaul of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program that would introduce preference criteria based on language and nationality.
Documents obtained by Democracy Now! indicate proposals would give priority to English speakers, white South Africans, and Europeans who oppose migration.
Thousands of white South African farmers and others have been murdered by racial majorities in recent years — Trump has expressed sympathy.
The changes would mark a departure from the program’s longstanding humanitarian focus. Officials suggest some of the new criteria would favour Europeans “targeted for peaceful expression of views online, such as opposition to mass migration.”
As of now, no formal policy enactment or public statement by President Trump confirming these proposals has been released.
The plan has drawn criticism from refugee advocacy groups, which argue that it would undermine equitable access to refugee protection and distort the program’s purpose.
Observers say the proposals remain under review and that any implementation would require further administrative action.
